If you’re attracted to the idea of making a living online but don’t think you have the necessary skills, I want to assure you that lack of skills won’t stop you. Regardless of what your career has been or what skills you do or don’t currently have, you have as good a shot at online marketing success as anyone.
Flashlight in the Dark
Imagine you’re in total darkness. You can’t see your own hand in front of your face. You want to get home but you don’t know which direction to walk. You might trip over a stone or fall in a hole. You can’t be sure what’s out there. Maybe you’re standing on a cliff and don’t know it yet …
You have a small flashlight in your pocket. You switch it on and discover that you can see about a foot in front of you. You start to run but you hit something and fall down. You get up and move slowly but you’re still moving. As you continue on, you hit dead ends or discover you’re not where you’re trying to go. You try every direction and finally get on the path that leads home.
This is the story of many entrepreneurs. They know where they want to go and, despite not knowing how to get there, they start moving.
Perhaps it sounds dramatic but it’s spot-on, particularly for people coming to online marketing from other careers, who don’t know much about computers or technology or marketing.
Fortunately, getting the skills to create success in Internet sales isn’t difficult or nearly as dramatic as this flashlight story. I can say this with 100% confidence because I had no aptitude for computers or technology when I started out. That didn’t stop me and it won’t stop you either.
What You Don’t Need to Know about Building Websites
When you’ve decided that you want to get into Internet marketing, the thing that you need to keep in mind is that it’s about getting leads, sales, and customers for whatever it is you’re marketing.
Getting leads, sales, and customers means you’ll spend the majority of your time and energy on the actions that will get you these resources for your product or service. If you don’t know the actions, you should spend your time learning them.
You can learn from a book, an online course, or a person. When I was starting out in 2015, I chose a person to help me. I’d looked at the websites of some of the successful online marketers. The whole thing was incomprehensible to me. I had no idea where to begin building a website.
But honestly, the point is not to learn how to build websites. Building websites is not going to bring you leads, sales, and customers. There are much faster ways to obtain those things than learning how to build a website.
In MOBE, we get started in Internet marketing and make commissions with no website. It has high-converting landing pages (like a one-page website) or step-by-step instructions on how to quickly make their own. They don’t want their new affiliates eating up months of their time building a website or a blog or doing anything else that wouldn’t help them establish their businesses.
They (and you) should be spending their time on marketing.
What You Do Need to Know about Marketing
As I stated earlier, when you’ve decided to start a career in Internet marketing, you need to fix in your mind on getting leads, sales, and customers for whatever it is you’re marketing.
- Having a product or service to sell.
- Creating ads that drive traffic to the landing page for your offer.
- Creating landing pages to capture lead information.
- Creating emails to send to your leads as follow-up.
- Learning how to write ad copy (or hiring someone who can) so you can create ads, emails, and landing pages.
- Placing ads.
- Monitoring the results of your ads.
Concentrate on these kinds of activities—not building websites—and you will get some traction online and start making money.
I am not suggesting that any of this is a snap. There will be a learning curve but it’s better to undertake mastery of the seven points above that will actually move your business ahead.
