How to Jostle Internet Marketing Jargon

When starting a new hobby or career, it can feel like you’re trying to learn a foreign language. Unless, of course, you are learning a foreign language!

Similarly, learning internet marketing can feel like the rest of the class is way ahead of you while you quietly observe and pretend to understand everything, when in fact you’re struggling to understand anything.

All of the jargon involved in this industry will be difficult to comprehend at first, and that’s okay. It’s normal not to know things when you’re just starting out. Remember, certain terms and words will only feel incomprehensible because you’ve never heard them before. They’re actually not difficult to understand, and with time you’ll be completely fluent in internet marketing speak.

The Problem

When I was still new in this industry, it took me a month to work out what certain terms meant. For example, things like “domain name,” “hosting,” and how all these can be integrated with an email auto-responder were all new to me.

There are also issues with trying to figure out the acronyms that people in this business use, like:

  1. CMS
  2. CPC
  3. CTA
  4. PPC
  5. PPV
  6. RSS

Then, you also have to know what “lead capture pages” or “opt-in pages” are. Relax! It’s not as complicated as it appears. You can do very simple online research to find the definitions for the acronyms above. You can use sites like that provide a glossary for important marketing shorthand.

And that’s where the secret lies: to simply learn.

Learn One Thing at a Time

Don’t try to take everything in all at once. Instead, you should learn and remember one term at a time until you can use it without looking it up. Treat this the same way you would preparing for your school exams.

Reviewing for your exams was the only way you were able to remember everything you needed to. But don’t let that put you off internet marketing; it’s not as difficult as studying for a test. In fact, the more you remain active in the business, the easier it will become.

Additionally, you’ll improve your overall skills when you take the time to learn about internet marketing. According to an article in The New Yorker, learning a new skill has many unexpected benefits, including improved working memory, improved verbal intelligence, and increased language skills.

Ask a Lot of Questions

Going back to the school example, I’m pretty certain that when you were in doubt, your teacher would encourage you to raise your hand to ask a question. One way of understanding your lessons, and ultimately completing your work correctly, was to ask questions about what you didn’t understand.

It would take a little courage to raise your hand in a classroom full of peers. Likewise, it can take the same amount of courage to email your trainer with marketing questions. But you must not let that fear hold you back.

Raise your hand. Ask questions. It will benefit you immensely.

Immerse Yourself

The greatest onscreen performances were a result of actors immersing themselves in the story and subsequently getting into character.

Similarly, you’ll only succeed in this industry if you embrace knowledge; you’ll soon understand jargons by being engaged in internet marketing know-how.

Here are things you can do to familiarize yourself more with the industry:

  1. Attend events
  2. Complete necessary training
  3. Read relevant materials
  4. Join webinars
  5. Speak the terminology (It will soon become second nature)

And Finally …

Don’t give up! Although the road to becoming a successful internet marketer may seem long and filled with many obstacles (terminology, sales, etc.), the more you learn, ask, and immerse yourself, the quicker you’ll become successful.

If you stick with it for 2-3 months, you’ll soon pick up the internet marketing language and be on your way to building your very own business. If you want to find out more about building your own online business, My Top Tier Business is a great place to start.
